Assertion Analysis #1 : Is the American Dream actually gone?

The injustice of the American legal system makes some people want to leave, but what makes other people want to stay? The American Dream has always been referred to having substantial freedom, amassing enough money to be stable and other like qualities. It's also been to acquire a higher economic and class status. John Green, an award winning author, amplifies that the American Dream, like sleeping with a cheerleader, is dubious but still viable.

John Green states that pursuing the “American Dream” is a mediocre joke. He sarcastically explains how his parents worked hard, sacrificed a lot so their dream could come true and that was that “their son would lose his virginity to a cheerleader in the women's bathroom of a Waffle House just of the interstate”.  Also, using hyperbole he enthusiastically shares how his parents passed through hard trials and tribulations to put forth their one and only dream “cheerleader sex”. He undermines the intentions of immigrants coming to America for a sole purpose. He's also disrespecting them showing no regards to their hard work. He derides the idea of the “American Dream”.

There's something amiss about John Green’s statement, regarding his idea of the American Dream. Immigrants pouring into this country, fleeing from their unjust and corrupt government for a better life. Here in America a human being gets rights given to them just for being human but other countries people are stripped from their rights inequitably just from speaking their mind against their own government. Although here in America there has been cases where people have been unjustly treated just for looking like immigrants, upon this,it may also seem like our own government is prejudice against the lower class/people of color and more biased to people of higher class/white people, there are laws put in place and organizations to protect us. On these terms pursuing "The American Dream" in hope for a better life is a better option to immigrants than their own country. To some it may seem that the American Dream is dead, it has not. It has shaped and reformed through history and time. Back then it may have been freedom of religion, like our founding father came here for, but today it is giving our legacy an opportunity here in America, today it is fleeing a war torn country and a dictatorship, but one thing hasn't changed and Thomas Jefferson sums it up perfectly. We are all here and we all have the right to the “pursuit of happiness”.

Although John Green sticks to his opinion regarding whether or not the American Dream is really gone, it depends on the person itself. My mom has been living the American Dream, it doesn't specifically mean to be rich and amazingly successful but somewhat stableness. She came to this country to have a better life than before and that's what she's living. My siblings and I have a better life, she acquired a stable job and is able to sustain us.

  1. - Clear thesis
    - Would work better if paragraph 2 and 3 were based on rhetorical devices and analysis, for example paragraph 2 about sarcasm and comments about rights, paragraph 3 about hyperbole and comments about legacy of opportunity
    - Solid use of personal experience
